Day 1- Toronto to London

A Chestnut Tree in Holland Park
After an exhausting overnight trip from Toronto to Heathrow (where we were sure we spotted Margaret Atwood on our flight) we left our luggage at the hotel and proceeded to walk to Holland Park in the gorgeous September weather. We found these lovely benches, guarded by two slightly ornery magpies. A perfect place to sit and drink in the atmosphere.

Holland Park Tube Station

As we wandered down Holland Park Avenue we stumbled on some pretty attractive and funky shops. We got sucked into a typically English book shop, which smelled delightfully bookish...

And what did we find but a Margaret Atwood book. She was definitely in London. Actually we found out later that she was speaking tonight in Scotland so it was really her on the plane.

That nearer phone booth had WiFi!! Not quite sure how that works. There were lots of affluent school children in the neighbourhood all in uniforms and the younger ones playing tag in their wellies. And as fans of the show "As Time Goes By", we had to check out 21 St James's Gardens, which is used as the exterior of Jean Pargetter's house in Holland Park. It was just a perfect day for walking 13km on jet-lagged jelly legs.

So we had better call it a day and hopefully the blog entry tomorrow will be more coherent.

Cheers!

London, Avebury, Bath and a Foot Trails Walking Tour

Avebury Stone Circle, Wiltshire

The anticipation is building as we are now a week away from our "geeky history girl" tour of the UK. I am hoping to be able to regularly post photos for our families and friends, but anyone who would like to follow along with us is very welcome.

Pulteney Bridge Bath

Please feel free to leave any comments below. We have planned our accommodations in advance, as well as having our 4 day walking tour of the Wiltshire Dorset borders meticulously planned by Alison Howell of Foot Trails walking tours. The rest of the trip will develop on the fly, as we have lots of possible destinations and excursions researched, but a certain amount of chance and serendipity is going to determine our final route. We're sooooo excited!

These photos are "borrowed" from some online snapshots, however from here on in, only our photos will be posted. Wish us luck!

Check back here on September 23 to see our first postings. Cheers!
